I’ve been burnt out recently. On the couch, tired, thinking I should x, realizing I wouldn’t x, no matter what I thought. Not a great feeling, but it happens.
What had me so tired? It’s only good news (if not new news). My son got married and we hosted the reception in our backyard.

This was mid-January – just as Los Angeles was under the siege of wild fires. Did we dare host a backyard party, even as our go-bags were packed and waiting by the front door, just in case?
But family was flying in, and we were nowhere near the fires. As it turned out, the text we got saying “Pack your go-bags. You’re on Evacuation Watch” was sent to ALL OF LA, not just the perimeter of the actual fires. We were never in an area of evacuation watch, much less evacuation.
LA covers 469 square miles and is home to over 3.8mm people. Very big disasters in one – even two – areas can still leave large swaths of LA unscathed.
We were having one beautiful day after another. No good reason not to host this wedding which had been in plans for over 6 months. So, while our hearts still go out to people who suffered losses and trauma, we decided to let love and marriage prevail, on this Saturday in sunny Los Angeles.
Putting on a wedding – even a small one – is a job and a half, and since Christmas, I had done nothing but all wedding all the time.
Burnt out. To say the least.
I substacked about how to pick up and connect with your work again after a disruption. And so I begin anew. I’m back… or so I hope. My focus is back on my work and you, the writers I care about.
