We all have needs. And if you find yourself, doubting this… your needs aren’t being met, and you’re trying to excuse the universe for this oversight.
What do you need to write?
- Some of us need a brownie, a cookie.
- Maybe you’re one of those “But first, Coffee” moms that buy those mugs and t-shirts
- People like it hot. Cold. (Or in the pot, nine days old.)
- You might need music, silence, ambient noise.
- You might like your own desk or a coffee shop or a certain carel at the local library.
You deserve to have your needs met. What kind of space excites you? Where do you do your best work?

People judge themselves and others for having needs. But it is so much easier, more pleasant, and productive to just meet your needs.
Many of you know I’m avidly gardening this year. I have 41 foods growing in my back and side yards. And I’ve eaten arugula, strawberries, basil, bib lettuce, cilantro from my own garden.
This has all been growing either from seed or transplants since early February (southern California magic!) And the progress is such that I can see clearly that some of my plants are NOT GETTING THEIR NEEDS MET.
Look at these beans in the first pic. On the left, the plant is under the shade of a giant tree overhead. And they get bigger and better as they proceed right, i.e. out from under that tree! The bean plant on the left is practically dying, and the bean plant on the right is flowering, getting ready to produce vegetables.

Look at the beets! The difference from left to right is laughable! They are all in a row, planted on the same day, and get hand-watered equally. The difference is sun. The difference is GETTING THEIR NEEDS MET, and thriving as a result.

Beets on the left wither. Beets on the right thrive.
So, maybe you’re not interested in gardening. Maybe you think people with needs are needy. (Been there, felt that.) But this is where I’m going with this: You have needs. You might not know your needs aren’t being met. Usually, your life and accomplishments don’t have two to three more examples of how it might have worked out differently if your needs were met.
No one planted 3 or 4 of you in a row, and watered one, gave the other one snacks, and treated the lucky one to coffee and a room of one’s own. You are just you. Rooted. Trying. Growing. Thriving or not.
So this is a long-winded approach to telling you, you should join the Mighty Writers Club and write with us on Zoom. You are home in your comfortable space, with coffee, or wine, with music or a dog in your lap. You could be at a coffee shop or in an airport. You are zooming in from wherever it is convenient and writing with a supportive group of writers and a professional creativity coach.
Get what you need and thrive. Get your sun!
